Chapter History
In the winter of 1954-1955, Eleen Garnett with the
assistance of Halena Growney set about to organize a Delta Kappa Gamma Chapter
in Wayne County. At that time Delta Kappa Gamma was twenty-five years old. Pi
State was eighteen. There were no Chapters between Rochester and Oswego. Eleen
and Halena were members of Eta Chapter in Rochester. They felt that Wayne
County had the potential for a strong Chapter. After much preliminary work and knowing that twelve members were needed to organize a Chapter, on
April 27, 1955, a group of thirteen prospective members met at the Red Creek High School with Eleen,
Halena, Marion Masonar (President of Pi State and member of Eta Chapter) and
Mary Wintish (President of Eta Chapter). By the end of the meeting it was
decided to organize a new Chapter. On May 14, 1955, at the Sheraton Hotel in
Rochester at the Pi State Convention, two new Chapters were formed: Omega of
Wayne County and Alpha Alpha of Rochester.
Omega Chapter has been instrumental in the formation of three Chapters. In 1959 Omega Chapter began the consideration of investigating possibilities of a Chapter for Yates and Ontario Counties. Thus began Alpha Tau. In September of 1966 Omega Chapter again began plans for forming a new Chapter. In the fall of 1968 at the State Executive Board Meeting Omega Chapter was granted approval to organize a parallel Chapter. On March 25, 1969, fifteen members of Omega Chapter became members of the new Beta Theta Chapter. At the Pi State Executive Board Meeting in Syracuse on September 21, 1974, Omega Chapter and Alpha Tau requested and were granted permission to work on forming a new Chapter in Livingston County. This resulted in the formation of Beta Tau.
