Current Newsletter - June 2018
Dear Omega sisters,
Hoping everyone enjoyed the Memorial Day weekend especially since Mother Nature didn’t disappoint. (There were days in May I thought we’d never be tucking away those wool sweaters!) If the Lord would just bless us one more time with lovely weather for our June meeting next week at the Ramada Inn in Geneva it would be appreciated.
As we learned at the May meeting, Peg Snyder, Holly Rich and the Scholarship committee have been busy finalizing the 2018 details and next Tuesday we’ll be introduced to our six scholarship winners and their parents. In addition, we’ll be celebrating Della’s retirement and installing our new officers.
Please review the May minutes for you to read before the meeting.
Our tentative schedule is as follows:
5:00 - Social Hour
5:30 - Shortened business meeting (introductions, May minutes approval, blessing, ECAC info, Pi State 2019 conference, one room school house painting project completed)
6:00 - Dinner (pink pig)
6:30 - Scholarship winners
7:00 - Recognitions
7:20 - Retirement celebration
7:30 - Installation of new Officers
Upcoming dates in 2018 -
Possible summer reads:
The Light Between Oceans by ML Steadman
Telling Memories Among Southern Women: Susan Tucker
Omega Gets Social - summer picnic (date in July - TBA)
Summer Executive meeting (all chapter committee chairs, officers, ECAC rep, Past Pres) Tuesday, August 14, 9:30 AM - Methodist Church, Rushville - Cindy Lynch will have a signup sheet at the June meeting.
There will be a clothing drive at the September meeting - more info in the August newsletter.
Ladies, Kerry, Sally, Adelle, Judy, Beverly and I can’t believe how these last two years have flown by. Being officers of Omega has been an honor and a privilege that we treasure now and will in years to come. Thank you Sisters, for your cooperation, your dedication and your enthusiasm. You made the roles we filled a pleasure. Our best wishes to the incoming officers and hoping they enjoy the next two years as much as we enjoyed the

May 2018
Dear Sisters,
As we prepare for Spring, look forward to the new growth and rejuvenation it brings, and are planning ahead to end our Biennium and transition to a new group of leaders it is surprising that we find a step back to some wintry weather. Such is April in New York. Hopefully it won't last long and we'll be on our way to warmer weather in May soon.
An upcoming project we have scheduled in May is the painting of the MORS one room schoolhouse on the Midlakes campus. We have set tentative dates of May 10th for scraping and preparation, with a rain date of May 12th . The painting will be done on May 17th , with a rain date of May 24th . Many hands will make light work. Please plan to join us if you can! Bring scrapers and brushes. Peg Snyder will provide the paint. More details will be discussed at our May dinner meeting. If you plan on helping please email Peg Snyder or Kerry Smartt. Let's hope mother nature cooperates and brings warm, sunny weather for our plans to spruce up the schoolhouse!
We hope to see many of you at the monthly dinner meeting on May 8th at Torrey Park in Geneva for our Founder's Day celebration. Ceremonies will have a Founder's Day presentation for us. Your new slate of officers will also have sign up sheets for you to indicate which committees you would prefer to be on. They will also be looking for members to chair those committees. Please consider how you can help our Chapter and volunteer for a role that suits you! With all the choices provided, you will also be able to fit hostess duties into the best month. Please read minutes from our April Chapter Meeting and be ready to discuss and approve them at the May meeting. A copy of our Standing Rules has been posted on the Chapter website as discussed at the last meeting.
Our June meeting will be held at The Ramada Inn in Geneva on June 5th. Many thanks to Lynda John for her work in securing this new venue for our June celebrations. We hope many members will be able to join us for our scholarship presentations, retirement celebrations and installation of new officers for the 2018-2020 biennium.
As the International conference in Austin Texas is approaching, we encourage you to visit the DKG International website www.dkg.org to access information regarding the proposed amendments and constitution grouping chart. There is a banner at the top of the member home page that allows you to register for webinars on May 8th or May 19th on the proposed amendments. Also, registration for the convention is now open on the website.
Happy Spring Sisters!

April 2018
Good morning Sisters,
The November auction seems like a very long time ago. As we prepare for the April 10th meeting at Centerpoint in Canandaigua there are a few pieces of information Kerry & I would like to share:
Many thanks to Renee Durso for arranging our April speaker - a representative from WEBC who will speak on women’s health - specifically bone health.
Della Ludwig has had a very difficult month. Yet again one of the Marcus Whitman graduates has been a victim of the Opioid crisis. As pastor of the United Methodist Church in Rushville all of Della’s care, wisdom and guidance has been called upon to comfort the Fladd family. Unfortunately, Marshall Fladd was one of two from the Whitman community that passed during the same week due to this epidemic. (I have begun to loose track but I believe Whitman has lost 6 graduates due to addiction over the last few years). Della will be part of a community discussion on the addiction crisis and has offered to share with us any information that she receives. It seems this issue has touched us all in some way leaving us feeling helpless and confused as to why and how this is happening.
The Omega Webmaster position will be open as of June 2018. If you are interested in the Webmaster position please let Kerry or I know as we’d like to have a smooth transition.
From Peg Snyder - Mary Ann Gilman asked if Omega could paint the white fence we donated to the MORS as it is in need. (For new members MORS is the transplanted and restored one room school house on the Midlakes property.) We could make this Omega’s spring project and paint after school or on a Saturday morning which ever fits our collective schedules. Any and all comments are appreciated.
The Educational Excellence Committee will meet on Saturday, April 14th, 9 AM at the First Methodist Church in Canandaigua to plan the 2018-20 program. Those asked to attend are Chairs of the following committees: Ceremonies, Cheer, Legislation, Arts & Music, the current 2nd VP and the Past President.
And, finally Kerry & I have very sobering news to report concerning our 2018-20 Officers Slate. As of today we do not have anyone filling the presidents position. There is no easy way to say this - the chapter cannot continue without leadership in the top slot. Everyone is leading busy lives - some busier than others and I’m sure there are issues some of our sisters are facing that most of us know nothing about. As Mary & Lynda and the Nominations committee canvassed members looking for a member(s) interested in serving as president they only received refusals. Kerry, Mary, Lynda and myself and the rest of your officers are still encouraging you to talk to each other, in hopes that one person (or two that are willing to co-serve) will come forward. The officers have discussed our options in the event that we come to the meeting on the 10th without a proposed name(s) for president. Our bi-laws state we must vote on a slate of officers by April. As of now we see three possible options:
1) Merge with another chapter
2) Disband the chapter completely
(The officers believe that these two options are directions no one wants to take.)
3) A possible temporary solution proposed by Della Ludwig would be to re-configure the officer positions creating a President’s Council. We would retain our 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents, Secretary & Treasurer. (We have names on the 2018-20 slate for these positions.) In place of a president we would ask that past presidents, or long standing members who feel capable, volunteer to become what would be called the President’s Council. The council would be comprised of seven (7) members. Six of the seven women would each select & lead one meeting during the year. The 7th woman would be responsible throughout the year for correspondence, emails, newsletters & state contacts. The members who chose to lead a monthly meeting would coordinate with the VP’s, sec & treas on what was needed to be addressed/discussed at their particular meeting - similar to our current executive council. Throughout the course of the year these women would each mentor one newer member in hopes that they would then feel qualified to take on future responsibilities at the executive level. Both Della, Maggie & I (Mary C.) have already committed to taking a month if this is the direction the chapter decides to take.
Please consider all options listed. If you have questions or suggestions please feel free to contact Kerry or myself understanding that since we are in uncharted territory we may not be able to adequately return an answer until after the officers meet on April 8. At that time we will be discussing options, any comments received, as well as preparing for both our meeting on the 10th and the planning meeting for next year’s calendar on the 14th.
Sincerely,
Mary and Kerry

October 2017
Happy Autumn everyone!
Hot, Indian summer to cold, raw, dreary days - October has it all!
Next Thursday, October 19th is our ECAC joint meeting. We'll receive a visiting DKG state rep as well as mingle with sisters from our other east central chapters. I for one look forward to visiting with old friends from Honeoye Central. Our theme is Ladies Shopping night - a reprisal of a theme from few years ago that was enjoyed by all. Some of the area vendors who will be participating are: Adorn, Crown Jewelers, Jam Berry, Lemongrass, Long’s Bookstore, Lin Locklear House Portraits, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Nature’s Way Massage, Norwex Products, Olivers, Silver Acres (homemade soap), Sweet Expressions, Tastefully Simple, Wicked-ly Scent Soap & Candle, and Stampin' Up. As you can see, something for everyone! If you haven't sent in your reservation you have till this Friday (10/13) - just let us know (as well as give us your meal choice) so we can reserve you a spot. You can pay next Thursday.
A reminder that Omega dues deadline is October 23rd - the amount is $75. You can mail your check to Judy Kiehle.
We have a change in procedure that everyone needs to be aware of. Gail Burr's Communications Committee has made the proposal than the monthly reservation no longer be emailed to members. Instead, the reservation form will be on the Omega website for you to download, print and mail to the designated committee member. This change will simplify the reservation procedure as well as encourage members to visit our chapter's web site. The first month this will be in effect is next April 2018. The following from our Web Master, Katja Stevens:
Members should go to http://www.dkgpistateomega.org/forms.html and then click on the 2nd red link that says "April Chapter Meeting Dinner Reservation Form." Just a note - November 2017 is up now - you would just look for "November Chapter Meeting Dinner Res Form".
Our annual auction will be here before we know it. I'm sure everyone is looking forward to this fun-filled event. Our theme of "Make It, Bake It, Fake It!" always ends up inspiring sisters to bring in some fabulous donations. Start preparing now so you're not caught up in the rush that precedes the holidays!
Finally, a reminder to committee chairs & officers. Our winter Executive meeting is at 9 AM, Saturday, November 4th at the Methodist Church on Main St in Canandaigua.
See you soon!

September 2017
Dear Sisters,
We hope that as summer is coming to a quick end you have all enjoyed time with family and friends this season. As many of us are preparing for the changes that bask-to-school has to bring, we are looking forward to reuniting with our members. The Executive Board meeting was held in August and we will report on news from committees at our September meeting.
We hope many of you have replied and will join us on September 19 at Gateway Grille in Canandaigua. We will meet with committees and hold summer book discussions that evening. There were three wonderful books to choose from, Hillbilly Elegy by JD Vance, Mindset by Carol Dweck, and Mindsets in the Classroom by Mary Cay Ricci. You still have time to pick and read one of these before the September meeting! Dawn Scales has asked that members bring slightly used quality items for a welcome back/grab bag giveaway. (Anything small that you would be willing to share with a sister.)
Attached you will find the minutes from our June meeting as well as a registration form for the North Central Area Council conference to be held on Saturday September 23rd. Spouses, friends, family or any guests that may be interested in the "Safe Passage to Oswego" are encouraged to attend. The deadline for registration is September 2. Please read the June minutes in order for us to approve them at September's.
Coming up in October will be our East Central Area Council meeting on October 19th at Club 86 in Geneva. Be looking for more info in early September to register for this "Women's Night Out" event with many local area vendors. (Our own Karen Varricchio will have Lemongrass products available.) Due to this event, we will not have a separate chapter meeting in October.
Other reminders include thinking of names of prospective members, paying dues in a timely manner, and preparing for our auction in November. Our membership chairs will be speaking more about how we can strengthen our chapter and look to candidates for new membership at the September meeting. We hope to have these suggestions by early November. Dues of $75 can be paid at the September meeting or mailed to Judy Kiehle at 49 Picture Book Park West Bloomfield, NY 14585. Our auction committee chairs will talk with us at September's meeting about how we can plan and prepare for another wonderful auction in November. Our goal is to bring more guests, bring/donate items, and if unable to participate that evening then please send donations! Both our auction and scholarship committees have continued to work diligently each year to fund and award new women educators!
Lastly, enjoy the Labor Day weekend and we wish all a happy fall and great start to a new school year.
Your Co-Presidents in Omega,
Mary and Kerry

August 2017
Good morning everyone!
Hope this newsletter finds you all enjoying what summer we've had. The fruit trees around me seem very happy so they at least have enjoyed our torrential rains!
We're getting ready for the August meeting (aka - the Omega summer picnic!). The picnic will be at the same place as last year - Seneca Lake State Park on August 16. Remember we pay per car so it helps to ride together AND if you have a senior in the car the car gets in for free.. Once you pass the gate house turn to the left and go all the way to the end past the splash park. The chapter will provide plates, plastic silverware, cups, drinks. Again, we're asking our ladies who are able, to provide a dish to pass. Remember if you're working this summer or are under the weather (figuratively, since we all are literally!) please just bring yourself - based on last year we'll have plenty of delicious dishes with food for everyone. Dawn S. has been busy with plans - she's asking that we search our homes and bring gently used or unused items for her door prize event which everyone enjoyed last year. We hope as many as possible can come to the picnic - we've missed all being together!
For those who are committee chairs - reminder our summer executive meeting is August 23rd - 9 AM at the Methodist Church in Canandaigua.
